TU-K Football team bags three awards in SportPesa Tourney
The Technical University of Kenya football team scooped three out of seven awards in the just concluded ninth edition of the SportPesa Super 8 Soccer tournament.
The team was crowned overall champions after topping the tourney that brought together 101 teams from Nairobi County with a cash award of Sh0.5m.
Team’s captain Jaconaya Omondi, 23, won tournament Best Player Award, the team at the same time won Starehe Best Regional Champions Category Award.
The other four awards went to Diguna FC – the Best Promising Team, Raymond Onyango Best Referee Award, Brian Bure of Kabete FC who won the Golden Glove Award and James Mwangala of Kamukunji FC who picked the Golden Boot Award. TU-K beat Kiambiu Youth 4-2 in post-match penalties in the final that was held at Nyayo Stadium on August 30 to emerge tournament champions.

Speaking during the Gala Award ceremony held at Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi on Friday September 18, Sports Cabinet Secretary Dr. Hassan Wario praised TU-K team for emerging best football talent in Nairobi. He urged the youths to venture into professional sporting terming it as a better avenue for earning a living.
“We congratulate all sports personalities who helped Kenya top the standings at the just concluded World Athletics Championships. Others such as Volleyball and Rugby have represented the country well, this is where young people should focus their energies,”said Wario. He added that the government was collaborating with other stakeholders in tapping talents from grassroots where they could easily get sponsorship. Besides, Wario said the government was building stadia to nurture talents. Among those present during the ceremony were SportPesa CEO Ronald Karori, Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mweke, Extreme Sports CEO, Hussain Mohamed, among others.Karori said “We chose grassroot football because we wanted to identify raw talent and build on it. The venture will soon be extended to Coast and Western
regions and later across the country.”
Technical University Sports Manger Morris Ochieng who was accompanied by university football head coach Francis Oduor, his assistant Francis Oluoch congratulated the team for their hard work and outstanding performances this year.
Meanwhile, the team recently won other trophies including the football title in the Kenya University Sports Association Ball Games in April this year, they also emerged best at St. Paul’s Open Tournament in June this year beating Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). The team is currently leading in the ongoing University and College Football leagues(UCFL)
